PELVIC HEALTH
The field of pelvic floor physical therapy has grown significantly in recent years, but
what exactly IS it? The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that connects your pubic bone to your
tailbone and works in conjunction with a large group of other muscles including those of your
back and abdomen. These muscles have a lot of functions and can get injured, weak, or tight,
just like any other muscle in the body, and when that happens, physical therapy can be a huge key in correcting any issues that may arise!
“Common” not “normal” is a phrase we use in pelvic floor. Women AND men are told so
many things are bound to happen during and after child-bearing years and with age, such as
leakage, pain, and heaviness with activities such as exercise, coughing, sneezing, and laughing.
While these symptoms are common, they are not normal and can be treated with pelvic floor
physical therapy. At Four3 we can provide care throughout the prenatal to postpartum phases,
from perimenopause to menopause, and for problems such as urinary/fecal incontinence,
painful intercourse, urinary frequency and urgency, diastasis recti, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic
pain, and pelvic fullness/pressure/heaviness! We will dive deep into the root of the problem
with our goal being to address you as a whole person, not just a pelvic floor and get you back to
being you whether that means caring for your newborn, starting or returning to running or
weightlifting, or creating a lifestyle suited for longevity.
*The pelvic exam is not as scary as you think and drastically differs from your usual
OBGYN exam. Your pelvic floor physical therapist will often perform an internal exam (although
not required) to assess the strength, tone, and quality of the muscles of your pelvic floor. Your
therapist may ask you to perform a series of tasks such as muscle contractions in order to
assess the strength and endurance of the muscles. YOUR CONSENT is needed throughout the
entirety of the exam and if any point you feel uncomfortable, it is within your right to cease
treatment and decline further examination/intervention.
